With nods from American artists such as A$AP Rocky and Drake, the UK grime scene’s global takeover is popping off. When the British rap genre’s biggest artists flew to Austin, Texas for the annual South by Southwest festival last month, the reception from U.S. fans – old and newly found – was electric.
In this short documentary, music platform Crowdmix explores the UK roots and rise of grime in the US through the eyes of artists including Skepta, Ghetts, Lethal Bizzle, Jumanji, The Square, and Shakka, and also captures the energy at Stormzy’s first U.S. show.
Featuring commentary from SBTV founder Jamal Edwards, radio DJ and Apple Music/Beats1 host Zane Lowe, exclusive showcase footage and insightful interviews from the artists themselves, the documentary chronicles grime’s evolution and newly found appeal across the pond.
